An Empty Bed Is A Terrible Thing To Waste

All of the work I have put into getting this area ready for planting and I am left with one full length empty bed at the far end of my garden.  Its not because I ran out of seeds to plant, but because I ran out of motivation to fully prepare the bed the way I wanted it.  This is part of the large addition and I have had to go through and level each bed before I planted in it otherwise one end of the bed would be flooded each time I irrigate and the other end would be high and dry.  It's alot of work to move that much dirt.  I am running out of time to get things in the dirt if I want to harvest them by autumn.  I have also planted about as much as I want of everything I was planning to grow.  If I do plant more in this bed it would probably be intended for feeding the chickens.  It seems like most of the new addition will be devoted to feeding the chickens,  anyways, so why not give them one more bed of crops.  I have thought about just scattering a variety of seeds over the bed just to see what will grow there besides weeds.  I have also thought about planting some sort of cover crop there to help improve the soil and keep the weeds out of that area.  I never thought I would have more garden than I could fill up with plants in one season.  I do have to admit that this year's garden is one of the biggest home gardens I have ever seen, let alone been part of creating.  It's a little humbling to think that I have run out of ideas before I ran out of places to use them.
