Our onion patch is at it's peak. They have been bulbing up for several weeks now and many look like they will good sized onions when we go to harvest them.
I have been picking the smaller looking ones here and there to use in our meals. I want to leave the larger ones in the ground as long as possible so they can reach their full potential. The large ones tend to keep better anyways so I don't really need to pick them until I am ready. Besides, hardly any of the tops have fallen over yet so as far as I am concerned they are still growing.
The onions that were started from seed are growing at the far end of the bed in this picture. I started them in January and they look happier than the ones grown from sets. They have full thick leaves and very few have yellowed at the tips. The ones grown from sets are the ones in the foreground of that picture. As you can see those plants have started falling over here and there. This end of the bed is where I have been pulling most of the small onions from also. I had to pull two or three early because they had started forming seed heads which make for a tiny onion. By the looks of things it might be a few more weeks before I even consider harvesting this crop completely. I am betting that this harvest will be a pretty good size even with what we have eaten so far.
