The First Watermelon

The very first watermelon in my garden is growing on a plant that I put in about two weeks ago.  The plants I started from seed have only just begun to start trailing around the garden so flowers from them won't be far behind.

This melon looks huge in this picture, but this should give you a little perspective on that.

I am surprised at how perfectly formed yet perfectly tiny it is.  I hope it survives long enough to become a tasty melon.  Last year we only got one tiny melon, but it was so delicious.  This year the extras will be dehyrated into watermelon candy, and the rinds will go to the chickens.  They absolutely love watermelons, cantaloupes and honeydew melons, all of which are growing in the garden this year.
